Thanks to Marie Kondo’s book and Netflix show, many Oregonians are uncovering the life-changing magic of tidiness at home. But the fight against clutter shouldn’t stop there.
“Our workplaces are full of hazardous clutter,” said Leigh Manning, senior safety management consultant at SAIF. “Whether it’s creating a tripping hazard, no longer useful, or adding unnecessary stress.”
Manning offers five things to ditch so you can choose joy in your workspace:
- Boxes, cords, and other tripping hazards: Slips, trips, and falls are the leading causes of injury in Oregon. Reduce your risk by removing any tripping hazards.
- Expired equipment: Check your safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and smoke detectors, regularly to make sure they’re still operational.
- Unhealthy snacks and drinks: While candy and chips may satisfy a craving, they can make you more distracted and prone to injuries on the job. Trade unhealthy options with nutritional choices in communal spaces and vending machines.

- Your old, beat up shoes: Check your tread—if there’s not enough traction, you may be more prone to slipping.
