The day culminated with speeches by both our outgoing and incoming presidents. Brian Gray outlined his theme and goals for the year: Building Relationships.

We all build…hospitals, airports, interstates. But what is the most important thing we build? The most profitable? The most meaningful? The most impactful? Relationships.

He encouraged us to come together as a business community in addition to an industry, and to build personal relationships with our local and state elected leaders. He mentioned the importance of safety on our job-sites and in our homes, and emphasized the human element of safety beyond the technical and financial aspects we often focus on: we care about our employees, coworkers, and colleagues, and also the families that wait for them at the end of the day. Brian also encouraged keeping our future workforce in mind when building relationships with young people and interns we employ. We can easily compete with other industries when we factor in our work, our camaraderie, and the fact that we build communities. And finally, he encouraged our members to participate in events (like the Annual Business Meeting) to build relationships with their colleagues in the industry.
