NCCER and Build Your Future’s I BUILT THIS! video contest gives aspiring craft professionals and their instructors an opportunity to showcase outstanding construction projects.

The 2018 contest is now open! Watch winning videos from previous years and check out contest resources. Contest closes October 1, 2018.

Contest Categories & Prizes

Individual

  • 1st Place Secondary: $1,000 in prizes
  • 1st Place Postsecondary: $1,000 in prizes

Group

  • 1st Place Secondary: $1,000 in prizes
  • 1st Place Postsecondary: $1,000 in prizes

Popular Vote

  • People’s Choice: $1,000 in prizes

Contest Rules

Contest will be open for submissions until October 1, 2018. Video submissions will be reviewed and scored by NCCER/BYF at the close of the contest. NCCER/BYF will select the four winning videos for group and individual (secondary and postsecondary) categories.

The People’s Choice award will be decided by the public. The video with the most votes will receive this award. Videos that win other categories are also eligible for People’s Choice. Voting will be open to the public from October 15, 2018 through October 29, 2018.

Winning videos will be announced on October 31, 2018 at the end of Careers in Construction Month.

  • Entries must be videos no more than three minutes in length.
  • Entries must showcase projects that are relevant to the construction or maintenance industries.
  • Videos must answer the following questions verbally or visually:
    • What is your name, grade or year in school and what state are you from?
    • What is your project and why did you build it?
    • Do you plan on pursuing a career in construction?
  • Videos must showcase all stages of project development where applicable: design/planning, building and use.
  • Proper safety practices must be demonstrated by all individuals in the video when applicable. (Ex: hard hats, safety glasses, ear protection, etc.) Entries with safety hazards will be disqualified.
  • Dialogue must be clearly understandable over any machinery or background noise.
  • Projects must be completed in 2018.
  • Collaboration is encouraged! Entries submitted to the Group category may be co-produced by multiple disciplines: i.e. construction and media programs at the same or different schools.
  • Videos must be uploaded to YouTube.com.
  • Videos will be scored according to the supplied rubric.
  • Get creative! Time lapse, still photos (accounting for no more than 25% of video) and screen-within-a-screen are all acceptable to use.
