Help Needed
Portland Habitat for Humanity has opened the
RE-Store, a recycled
building materials resale center, in which we sell new, used and
slightly damaged building materials to the public at a fraction of
everyday prices. The RE-Store supports Habitat's mission of eliminating
poverty housing in the world, one family at a time, in more ways than
one. The proceeds are not only used to build more houses in the Portland
metropolitan area; the majority of the customers are landlords and low
income home owners that buy the recycled materials to repair, upgrade
and remodel their sub-standard houses thus improving poverty housing and
the community.
Materials that you may have left over or stored in your warehouse that
are in good, reusable condition, new or used, can provide a hand up to a
family in need. The Habitat RE-Store will gladly pick up your donations
and provide you with a donation receipt.
Please check your warehouse for items you might want to share. If you
have any questions, contact:

Habitat For Humanity Frequently Asked Questions
Who is
Portland Habitat for Humanity?
Portland Habitat for Humanity is a
not-for-profit, community-based organization.
Our purpose is to create partnerships in the
building of simple, decent homes for low-income
people in north, northeast and southeast
Portland. We maintain a strong, diverse
community by providing homeownership
opportunities to low-income individuals and
families.
What makes
Portland Habitat unique from other housing
organizations?
Portland Habitat for Humanity does not build
homes for people, but with them as equal
partners. Homeowners must invest 500 hours of
"sweat equity" into the building of
their home. The homes are then sold for around
$65,000 to $75,000 at no profit and through
no-interest loans. Homeowner's monthly
mortgage payments go into a revolving fund for
Portland Habitat that is used to build more
homes. No government funds are used in the
construction of Habitat homes.
What income
level qualifies one for a Habitat home?
Portland Habitat for Humanity serves low-income
individuals and families earning 35% to 60% of
the median income - between $19,560 and $33,348
for a family of four.
Does the
city of Portland really need an organization
like Habitat?
Yes. The decrease in affordable housing in
Portland is staggering. Portland is ranked the
second lease affordable home market in the
United States. The average home cost in
Portland has risen 30% in the last three years
to $182,000. Typical rent for a 2-bedroom
apartment ranges from $700-$1,000 per month.
Portland Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to
the ideal that all people deserve a simple,
decent place to live on terms they can afford.
Over 1,000 families apply to Portland Habitat
for home ownership each year.
How much does
a Portland Habitat home cost?
The cost of a home to a partner family averages
$65-75K. Habitat homes are affordable to
low-income families because there is a no
profit, zero mortgage interest loan. The average
monthly mortgage payment for a homeowner is
under $400.
How does
Habitat operate?
Habitat homes are built with a volunteer labor
force, utilizing building materials and
services that are donated by local business as
well as individual and corporate donations.
Construction takes approximately six months
from groundbreaking to dedication and an
addition one month until the family moves in.
Working in partnership with individuals,
businesses, neighborhood groups, churches and
synagogues, Portland Habitat ranks in the top
20 US producing affiliates and has built 75
simple, decent homes for partner families
since 1981.
How are
individuals or families selected for home
ownership?
